Benny Zenga continues to rock and roll....

I have spoken about Benny and his killer site The Winking Circle before but this is some of his newer stuff. Stay tuned we are working on a gig to raise some cash to bring Benny to Duluth for the Free Range Film Fest so we can meet this crazy dude personally.

Universal Klister and Belarus Video on Patagonia blog

Thanks to Kasey at Patagonia for putting my vid up on "The Cleanest Line" or http://www.thecleanestline.com/
I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Patagonia the company and the people that work there. Hi to all!

I know that Riis admitting to doping is old news but this picture is just too crazy not to post. I grabbed it from
http://thoseresponsible.com/blog/
Riis just looks haggard and rough in this shot, perhaps this is how you really feel on drugs??

VHS Virus is coming

So check out this stuff at http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/pages/vhs.html This virus is spreading and is pretty under the radar right now. On my travels in WI I have found that the fishermen and enviros there are in terror about this due to the fact that there is no action occuring and no awareness in the general population that this virus is out there and how dangerous it is. In fact today on MPR's Mid-Morning show I called in to ask about the disease during thier annual fishing show and the "expert" on the show had no idea what I was talking about, although the disease is all over the internet and even the New York Times. And I quote.....

Bait Dealer's Permit - May 24, 2007

Disinfection protocol for people who work around VHS infected waters [PDF, 107KB]

Report fish kills to the DNR TIP line - 1-800-TIP-WDNR - (800) 847-9367

The Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus (VHSv) in Wisconsin
A deadly new fish virus that caused huge fish kills in several eastern Great Lakes in 2005 and 2006 is likely already in Lake Michigan and may be in Lake Superior and the Mississippi River. Its presence in northeastern Wisconsin's Little Lake Butte des Morts was announced May 12 by DNR and a special Natural Resources Board meeting was held on Thursday, May 17, 2007 to consider expanding emergency rules, in this area of Wisconsin, to prevent the spread of the disease. Additional sampling has also preliminarily confirmed the virus' presence in Lake Winnebago (DNR News Release - 5/18/2007 ). Map: Lake Winnebago System [PDF 41KB]. We need your help to ensure this virus doesn't spread to more inland lakes and rivers.

Darrens works of art

Check it.
Darren at http://canoelover.blogspot.com/ is hand forging some Sauna door (outer) handles for me from some old logging spikes I found near an old late 1800's mill site. Looks pretty sweet! Thanks Darren!

History is hard to resist

Sorry for another history post but I get a kick out of this stuff. Look at how the Bike messengers have evolved! Hurl, why not start selling this garb to the single speeders. I like how bikes were in the lexicon of everyone from big dudes to young kids.

1933 trip down the old Miss...

So check this out, I found it on the MN Historical Society site.
This is Sumner Bright and Jack Furhman, they paddled the length of the Mississippi River (1900 miles?) in 1933! Rad, I bet that was a kick ass trip.

Laacke and Joys Road trip

Had a really fun road trip to Milawaukee this week for the Laacke and Joys Paddlefest sale. On the way down I stopped by Jeremy's farm, and had some of the best beer, pizza and company you could hope for. From there I spent time in Madison, then off to Laackey's where I hung with Kevin Haro, slept in the back of my truck and spoke about boats all day.

Team BD Reunion

Ah are all things circular? One minute I get a message from Cuz looking for pictures he can use in his book on 10 years of Cloudveil and then the whole nest of hornets come out of the woodwork, and THEN a trip is born. Seems like after over 5 years of skiing together in B.C. Team BD only needed two years apart from each other before they decided on a reunion tour, a green wax, face shot, stumbling party on the Coastal range is in the works and who knows, maybe they will convince this flatlander to ride the dragon one more time...............

I love this blog, good variety, good content with constant and consistent posts. The rider though is my wife! I have also been listening to the POD Cast Fitz Cahal is putting out called the Dirtbag Diaries. Sort of like This American Life, only Outdoor style.

Three RIvers Demo and HPT trail report

I had a demo for the Three Rivers store in Lacrosse, WI. It was a great weekend. A good demo/sale plus it is always good to hang on old Miss and do some great single track riding as well. The hazy pic is actually the smoke that has traveled 400 miles south from the BWCA fires. As many of you know I am a singletrack addict and usually ride where ever I can. This was my first time on the HPT trails. (Humanpoweredtrails.com) I would say the comment on the sign that says "The best Trails in WI" is pretty close. I give the trails an A+ for sure. The only comment I would have is that they have too many log hops, many are rideable but most are gnarly chain ring breakers. I see why they are there, to slow speeds down but that could be accomplished with less hops and more switchbacks, that way the flow of the trail would not be inhibited. As it stands now the trail has fun sections but once you hit that flow we all love in MTB riding you are forced to do an awkward hop or worse, get off the bike.

You can see the smoke from Duluth

The Future of Destruction

This is the trend that I am seeing. ATV's are becoming bigger, have more horse power, wider wheel bases and are starting to blur the line between small jeeps or trucks. I am seeing more and more of these out and about and have to ask, when will the authorities make this connection and put a stop to it? The havoc reeked on the trails is much greater than the typical ATV and now they are also becoming more attractive to lazy sportsman who think they "need" them to access hunting and fishing. Soon they will be putting their deer stands right on them as well......

Vandals hit Thomson, Res/Midway River

So this is the stuff that just kills me. All this is from most likely one party, that has abused this area multiple times. Can you imagine going to such a gorgeous place, tearing it up with your ATV, then getting to the cool spot, burning a bunch of garbage, throw your beer cans in the water, then cut down a bunch of trees so that your view is better?

Hmmm a 2x4 and some rubber bands and we could get across......

The Winking Circle

This is one of the most refreshing things I have seen in a very long time. Take a moment and read the 3 Beans statement that these people make on the Winking Circle site. Awesome, as was the film "Ski Boys" that I was lucky enough to see the other day. Truly the best visual experience that I have seen in the past few years. For all those in Duluth, we might be lucky enough to see this at the Free Range film fest in a month or two.... Here is the site
http://www.thewinkingcircle.com/3beans.htm Oh yeah and the film trailer is at

Dusty the Roofer finishing up the Sauna

Dusty finished up the roof today. He needed some paddling equipment so I obliged and did the barter. As usual, fast friendly service, and Roosey was there to make sure he worked up to speed.....

A successful sale at Midwest Mountaineering

The Midwest Mountaineering show was a gas this year. Although sales drive me nuts it is always fun to run into people whom I have not seen all winter. People like Mike Dahlberg, Scott Baackes, Mark Wilford, John Kiffmeyer and a huge plethora of others both from Mn and other places. The sale was brisk and I just about sold throug every Astral PFD that Midwest had in stock. I also cleaned house on the IR Excursion skirt, "What boat are you using?"
