Same with his equally awesome and special Boat book -- there are as few books about alternative boat life as for such skiing. Even though so many roll that way!

I suppose anyone looking at the cover can tell it's a freaky book, but really it's a NOVEL. It's a frickin LOVE STORY. And it has sex and drugs. ...Yet it's also all about XC skiing! Even in the non-fiction sense. It's a book about skiing. A bit like a how-to. But it's done in a way that includes letters from his girlfriend up in the hills as she reads his work thus far. Such a nice structure. The female voice in a ski book!

Hal was excited to revive his books. We exchanged some nice letters. But soon after that, Hal died. And his family requested that these books never again see the light of day. Embarrassed? (I note that his PUBLISHER actually burned his boat book inventory! ...They changed ownership and the new folks didn't want a HIPPIE boat book in their catalog so they trashed the press run. But some got out. How often does a publisher participate in censorship? Ha! I lot more often than we think! ...Awesome boat book. "Captain Nemo's Cookbook Papers...")

So what I did was buy up and resell all the copies of both books that I could over about 10 years. I promoted them with my Out Your Backdoor website and eBay store. I did what I could to keep them in play, rather than making folks have to stumble onto them.

I see you wrote this in 2006. Books have died since then. I used to run the biggest/only outdoor specialty bookshop. Sales tanked for everything, new and used, about 5 yrs ago.

...But I'm publishing a radical new XC ski book myself! : ) Silly, I know. But... books. The kids haven't replaced em. They're just trying to do without. Doesn't work. We'll see!JeffOYBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10087632143369804638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36247126.post-1163441622134140422006-11-13T10:13:00.000-08:002006-11-13T10:13:00.000-08:00Hi Hansi,Found thru Megan K. that you're spreading...Hi Hansi,
Found thru Megan K. that you're spreading my age around...
